A systematic review of antimalarial medicinal plants in Democratic Republic of the Congo

In Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium falciparum. Malaria one country's major public health issues and responsible for death tens thousands people every year in both rural urban environments. Antimalarial drugs are commonly used but some recorded cases drug resistance obstacle to controlling spread malaria. It therefore essential identify new bioactive molecules as an alternative. Many medicinal plants with different properties have been treatments variety diseases DRC, including This study provides systematic review antimalarial plant resources DRC. From 28 papers on ethnomedicine published between 2001 2019, total 232 species belonging 67 families identified 13 provinces was reported treatment A large number these belong Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Rubiaceae, Apocyanaceae families. Species cited more than three include Cymbopogon citratus, Vernonia amygdalina, Rauvolfia vomitoria Catharanthus roseus. Most were tree species, phanerophytes predominating. addition, leaves main ingredients preparing remedies, most decoction administered orally.
